Love is in the action, not the air.
Happy Valentines Day! Hope you remembered :) The legend of Valentines Day is very murky and has many suggested beginnings but the idea of love has been around a long time; like since before time began! God by definition is Love and his expression to us in Christ, show's that "God SO loved the world." I dont claim to know why, I only know it is part of his nature to love, unconditionally. So much so that he wanted to make a way for us to never be separated from Him. So today if you know Christ it is a great big "I love you" valentine from God.
Jesus went on to teach in John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that they would lay down their life for their friend". We, of course, immediately say that is huge! For my child, my spouse, I dont think I would have to think about it. But here is the greater context. There are many ways to "lay your life down", the context is to not make your life the main focus of your existence. You can lay your life down by standing by and helping someone overcome difficult circumstances. You can lay your life down by giving sacrificially of time and resources. You can lay down your life by standing up for someone who cannot stand for themselves.
The Lord says in John 13:35 "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." The world needs to know and see a deeper love than just hearts and flowers and candy. Caring and giving and sacrificing for another shows the world the truer definition of loving,
